The Story Behind the Hotel Ivoire

Another big thank you to John James (@ourmaninafrica) for sending me this article last fall about the origins of the Hotel Ivoire in Abidjan. While the story from earlier this week focussed on the Israeli developer, this report details a bit more about what the hotel meant to the country, especially President Houphouët-Boigny, who, the article reports, demanded the hotel be built after visiting Monrovia and seeing the Ducor Intercontinental on the brow of the city's highest hill and wanting to best his rival, Liberian President William V.S. Tubman. The same architect, Neal Prince, who was one of the 'house architects' for Pan Am's Intercontinental Hotels, designed both properties.
